Well, the rain cleared and my son and I were sure that we would see balloons this morning. We got up at 5 AM and drove back out to Turf Valley to see the 6:30 AM balloon launch. There was not a cloud in the sky and the temperature was perfect. Even though there was not hint of wind, there was a forecast for some strong gust later in the morning, so they cancelled the balloon watch. :( Talking about disappointment.
Both Eric and I don't usually get up at 5AM on Saturday so this change in plans left us beside ourselves. After a little discussion, we decided to head to Great Falls (C&O Historic NP). We were there just after 7AM and the weather only got more beautiful. The Potomac River was roaring-- definitely higher than it was when we visited last weekend. I got pictures from the overlook and from the path. I was sitting down for one set of pictures and some hikers came upon me, thinking I had fallen, until they saw me raise my camera trying to get a good angle on the angry river.
After visiting the overlook, Eric and I headed down the towpath. We were going to go to an old outlook, when I saw a view I thought would be interesting. We headed down a path to the water and shot some there. Then we scrambled up some rocks (very safely, I might add) to sit on an outcrop with a super view. From there, we could see the river and some of its inhabitants (heron & geese). We also saw some kayakers and a Park Police helicopter flew circles by us fairly low.
