We have been keeping watch on the chrysalis in our yard. As this week progressed, the color slowly changed. This morning it was damp as it rained last night but you could clearly see the pattern of the wings. I checked it at 11 AM and there was no change. When I returned, the butterfly was out, hanging on the shell of its chrysalis. As I was getting set to photograph it, I noticed another monarch in the yard. It too looked like it had recently emerged, although it was able to fly. That must have been the other caterpiller whose chrysalis we were not able to find. I monitored the butterfly over the next few hours and saw it gain in strength. Finally, it flew away. I am sure it has a long journey ahead of it. I hope it (and its offspring) return next year.
